Stonewall Youth is an organization of youth, activists, and allies that empowers lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, questioning, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQQIA) youth to speak for themselves, educate their communities, and support each other.
Stonewall Youth envisions a community in which all queer, gender variant, and gender non-conforming youth have a full spectrum of choices regarding their bodies, self-expression, and legal rights.
Social Justice – Social Justice is a process, not an outcome, which (1) seeks fair (re)distribution of resources, opportunities, and responsibilities; (2) challenges the roots of oppression and injustice; (3) empowers all people to exercise self-determination and realize their full potential; and (4) builds social solidarity and community capacity for collaborative action.*
Learning – We are committed to building an environment of growth, mentorship, and learning.
Sassiness – We are full of fun, confidence, self-love, friendship, and jauntiness.
Inclusion – We strive to go beyond acceptance to full inclusion of all LGBTQQIA youth in all aspects of our organization.
Compassion – We reach out to individuals who are struggling.
Family – We choose to be part of a family that embodies safety, trust, and friendship.
Self-Care – In order to accomplish our mission, we need to take care of ourselves because we are the movement.
*This definition of social justice was originally written by the UC Berkeley Social Justice Symposium.
Stonewall Youth began in 1991 as a series of community meetings to discuss the needs of LGBTQQIA youth in the area. The people involved had drive, passion, and vision that grew into providing a consistent weekly support group for youth that still continues to meet today. Since then, Stonewall Youth has grown in amazing and wonderful ways. Weekly support group meetings are still happening and usually have anywhere from five to thirty people present.
Stonewall youth is an organization for youth up to the age of 21 that identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Questioning, Intersex and/or Asexual. We also have wonderful community members that are part of our Board of Directors and Staff Collective.
We have come a long way in the last year! Interested to know what's happened and where our funding comes from? Download a PDF copy of our 2010 annual report here.
